Report: Skins Betting Sites Use Deceptive Practices

A former coder for online skins betting sites has blown the whistle on scams by “case opening” skins betting sites.

The unidentified coder spoke to eSports journalist Richard Lewis, at RLewisReports.com, on condition of anonymity.

The report focused on case-opening sites that offer a catalog of variously priced virtual cases to choose from. The cases are guaranteed to contain a “skin”—a virtual tool or weapon used in games such as Counter Strike: Global Offensive made by game maker Valve.

The value of these skins has led to betting and gambling operations estimated to be valued at about $5 billion.

Valve has tried to close down skins betting sites, but has not targeted the case-opening sites. The source told Miller that these sites regularly skew win rates, concoct fake winners, and engineer wins for sponsors so that they can be broadcast on YouTube.

The sites also make it so that only the least expensive skins are won by players.

“On the front of the site it says you can win a knife, or an expensive item,” the source told Lewis. “Meanwhile the site has it set to zero so you literally can’t. Every site I’ve worked on does it this way and requests these features.”

The source also told Lewis that he expects case-opening sites won’t last long once word gets out about their practices.

Preliminary Ruling Goes Against Gibraltar in UK Tax Dispute

The Court of Justice for the European Union has ruled that within the EU, Gibraltar and the UK must be treated as a single member.

The preliminary ruling means the UK did have the right to impose its Point of Consumption Tax—passed in 2014—on the territory. The Gibraltar Betting and Gaming Association challenged the law saying the UK could not impose restrictions on other members of the EU and it should be treated as a separate tax jurisdiction.

The association initially challenged the tax law to the High Court of England and Wales, but that court referred the case to the CJEU.

The CJEU has essentially defined the status of Gibraltar within the UK and the European Union in order for the dispute to be solved. Though the territory is not technically part of the UK, within the context of the EU, the UK and Gibraltar must be treated as a single member state, the CJEU ruled.

The ruling is preliminary and the court has not released an official ruling.

The stance, however, could have an impact on Gibraltar as Brexit talks move forward. Gibraltar officials have repeatedly said they want the territory to remain in the EU.

Casino Connection AC is a weekly online magazine focusing on gaming news, Atlantic City nightlife and entertainment, and comprehensive coverage of New Jersey’s online gaming industry. With a mixture of in-depth journalism and multi-media features, Casino Connection AC brings you complete coverage of entertainment, special events, nightlife, restaurants, promotions and of course, everything about gambling. With the debut of online gaming in November 2013, the online magazine will be the most comprehensive source for information related to that launch.

CONTRIBUTORS TO CASINO CONNECTION AC

Roger Gros is publisher of Global Gaming Business magazine, the leading trade publication for the gaming industry. He has also been president of Casino Connection International, the magazines’ parent company since 2001. Prior to joining CCI, Gros was vice president of Casino Journal Publishing Group from 1984-2000, and was editor of Casino Journal, the National Gaming Summary and founding editor of Casino Player magazine. Gros was named “Businessman of the Year” for 1998 by the Greater Atlantic City Chamber of Commerce, and received the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012 at the American Gaming Association’s Communications Awards. He is also the author of How to Win at Casino Gambling, published in 1996 by Carlton Books.

Mike Pritchard has been a journalist covering Atlantic City and the South Jersey shore for nearly 25 years. From his early days as an Atlantic City City Hall beat reporter for the Press of Atlantic City, to an entertainment and casino reporter for both the Press and Atlantic City Weekly, there’s little about the casino resort he hasn’t covered. In recent years, Pritchard has created and run a successful poker blog on Atlantic City casino poker rooms for Atlantic City Weekly and continues to blog about gambling.

Robert Rossiello is the art director for Casino Connection Online and a contributing editor for Global Gaming Business magazine. He designs and produces the supplemental magazines to Global Gaming Business: Casino Design, G2E Preview, RD&E and Tribal Government Gaming. He also is a photographer for these magazines and their websites. Prior to joining Casino Connection in 2003, Robert worked for over a decade in casino marketing and customer service for such Atlantic City properties as Tropicana Casino Hotel, Trump Taj Mahal and Bally’s Atlantic City.

Frank Legato is the editor of Global Gaming Business magazine. A nationally recognized expert on slot machines, Legato has served as editor and reporter for a variety of gaming publications, including Public Gaming, IGWB, Casino Journal, Casino Player, Strictly Slots and Atlantic City Insider. He has been writing on gaming topics since 1984, when he launched and served as editor of Casino Gaming magazine. He is the author of two books on gaming, “How To Win Millions Playing Slot Machines…Or Lose Trying” and “Atlantic City: In Living Color.” He holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism and a master’s degree in communications from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pa.
